what is muay thai?

Muay Thai is the national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. An ancient form of stand up striking used during war, also known as ‘The Art of Eight Limbs’, it combines the use of the fists, shins, elbows and knees. Once weapons were dropped, the fighters used the sharpest and hardest parts of their bodies to engage in hand to hand combat. Although Thaiboxing can be traced back as far as the 16th century, it is only in the 20th century that it became Westernised by adding a traditional boxing ring, gloves and timed rounds. It has gained most of it’s notoriety through UFC where it is one of the most favoured and respected forms of stand up striking.
